Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6

  • Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in numerous physiological processes in the body. It is a member of the B-vitamin complex and exists in several related forms, including pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine, all of which can be converted into their active coenzyme form, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP).

  • Vitamin B6 has several important benefits for the body, including energy metabolism, hemoglobin formation, hormone regulation (such as those involved in sleep, mood and stress response), and support of the immune and nervous systems.

  • Good dietary sources of vitamin B6 include poultry, fish, lean meats, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and bananas.

  • Ellement includes B6 in the form of Pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P-5-P), which is the active coenzyme form of Vitamin B6 and is considered the preferred form for supplementation. P-5-P offers enhanced bioavailability, as it can be readily utilized by the body without the need for conversion. It bypasses conversion steps and is more efficient, particularly for individuals with compromised enzymatic activity.

  • High doses of B6 can lead to adverse effects. The safe recommended daily upper limit (UL) is 100 mg.
